The State of Ohio Under President Trump

As Trump Prepares to Deliver State of the Union Address Tuesday, A Look At His Broken Promises and How Ohio Has Fared Under His Administration

After President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address was delayed by Trump’s $11 billion 35-day government shutdown, the president is set to deliver his address today. Ahead of President Trump’s address, For Our Future Ohio is taking a look at past promises Trump has made — and broken — in his addresses to Congress and the American people.

“From making health care less affordable and accessible to threatening jobs with his tax scam, Donald Trump’s presidency has been defined by broken promises and has been an abject failure for Ohio’s hardworking families,” said For Our Future Ohio spokesperson Daniel van Hoogstraten.

As President Trump prepares to deliver his State of the Union address, here’s a look at just a few of Trump’s many broken promises:

PROMISE: “The way to make health insurance available to everyone is to lower the cost of health insurance, and that is what we are going to do.” — President Trump, 2017 address to joint session of Congress
REALITY: Thanks to President Trump and congressional Republicans’ health care sabotage campaign, health care premiums have spiked and 7 million more Americans are uninsured. Under Trump’s administration, the rate of uninsured children in Ohio has increased significantly.

PROMISE: “We should ensure that Americans with preexisting conditions have access to coverage.” –– President Trump, 2017 address to joint session of  Congress
REALITY: The Trump administration has made it easier for insurance providers to discriminate against the nearly 5 million Ohioans with a pre-existing condition. Furthermore, the Trump administration is refusing to defend protections for people with pre-existing conditions in court.

PROMISE: “Many car companies are now building and expanding plants in the United States…for many years, companies and jobs were only leaving us.  But now they are coming back.” — President Trump, 2018 State of the Union address
REALITY:
After receiving a $157 million tax windfall from Trump’s tax plan, General Motors announced that it is eliminating more than 1,400 jobs in Lordstown, Ohio.

PROMISE: “We will provide massive tax relief for the middle class.” — President Trump, 2017 address to joint session of  Congress
REALITY: Trump’s tax cut for the middle class is only temporary, and experts say the tax plan will make the middle class worse off in the long run. Trump’s tax plan is also failing to give workers the wage growth and job creation he promised.

PROMISE: “We will soon begin the construction of a great, great wall along our southern border.” — President Trump, 2017 address to joint session of Congress
REALITY: Trump’s costly and unnecessary border wall project has gone nowhere. Instead, Trump’s border wall vision sparked the longest government shutdown in American history, costing the U.S. economy $11 billion — $3 billion of which will never be recovered.

PROMISE: “Our terrible drug epidemic will slow down and ultimately stop.” — President Trump, 2017 address to joint session of  Congress
REALITY:
In 2017, the number of drug overdose deaths in Ohio reached a record high, with more than 4,800 Ohioans dying from a drug overdose.
