As More Than 2,500 Children Are Torn Away From Parents, Mike DeWine Declines to Act
As Ohioans across the state rally against the Trump administration’s ongoing policy of separating children from their families at the border, many Ohio leaders — Republicans and Democrats alike — have called for an end to family separation. However, when pressed on the issue Wednesday, Ohio Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike DeWine refused to stand up to the Trump administration.
For Ohio’s Future State Director Antonia Webb issued the following statement in response:
Thousands of children have been torn away from their parents as a result of the Trump administration’s inhumane and unjustifiable family separation policy. Both Republicans and Democrats have swiftly condemned this cruel policy, yet Mike DeWine is refusing to take a stand and call for an end to family separation. Mike DeWine’s cowardice is astonishing and wildly out of step with Ohioans who believe in keeping families together.
On Tuesday, 21 state attorneys general sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen urging the Trump administration to end its family separation policy. Mike DeWine did not sign the letter.
