As Mike DeWine starts his first day as Ohio’s 70th governor, For Our Future Ohio Action Fund (FOF-OH) is committed to holding the DeWine administration accountable and will continue to fight for Ohioans’ access to affordable health care, economic opportunity, strong public schools, and clean air and water.
Here are seven issues we’ll be watching closely under Governor Mike DeWine:
Pre-existing conditions: During the 2018 gubernatorial race, Governor Mike DeWine said that he will defend protections for people with pre-existing conditions. With nearly 5 million Ohioans living with at least one pre-existing condition, FOF-OH will hold Mike DeWine to his word and will fight back against attacks on Ohioans’ health care.
Ohio’s Medicaid expansion: Since Ohio expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, more than 1.2 million Ohioans have received health care coverage through the expansion. Ohio’s Medicaid expansion has been a resounding success, improving the lives of Ohioans who previously could not afford health insurance. FOF-OH firmly stands against any efforts to end, restrict, or add unnecessary barriers to this critical program.
Right-to-work: Last year, Mike DeWine said that so-called “right-to-work” legislation will not be on his agenda as governor. FOF-OH will continue standing up for workers and unions to ensure that Ohio does not become a right-to-work state.
Public education: FOF-OH will continue to hold Governor DeWine accountable for failures to adequately support public education, including DeWine’s and other Ohio politicians’ dereliction of duty in the ECOT scandal.
Local government support: Under the Kasich administration, local governments have suffered from extreme state budget cuts. As a result, communities across Ohio have had to raise taxes or cut local services. DeWine says he will be “a good partner” to local governments; FOF-OH will be watching to make sure he meets this commitment.
Opioids: The opioid epidemic continues to devastate Ohio. In 2017, the number of drug overdose deaths in Ohio reached a record high, with more than 4,800 Ohioans dying from a drug overdose. With as many as 170,000 Ohioans abusing or addicted to opioids, FOF-OH will continue to put pressure on Governor DeWine so that Ohioans get access to the treatment they need.
Trump accountability: President Trump’s divisive rhetoric, dangerous policy agenda, and broken jobs promises have left Ohio workers, families, and communities behind. Governor DeWine must be willing to stand up to Trump whenever the president’s actions hurt Ohio.
