PREDICTION: President Trump and GOP Will Lie About Health Care Today

Jun 21, 2017

Columbus, Ohio — With today’s deadline for insurers to sign up to participate in the Affordable Care Act’s Health Insurance Marketplace, President Trump and Republicans in Congress are sure to shift blame and invent facts to distract from the damage they are already doing to people’s health care.

No matter what he tweets and what he says, it’s the Trump administration that bears responsibility for the decisions health insurers are making to raise costs or even exit the Marketplace.

Don’t believe what they say, check the facts for yourself…

  1. Between 2016 and 2017, average net premiums for Marketplace consumers increased by $1 per month after tax credits. Here’s a chart that Trump’s own CMS released on March 15, 2017, that shows the average silver plan cost for a consumer was $100 in 2016 and increased to $101 in 2017 after tax credits.

  1. The well-respected market analyst Standard & Poor’s repeatedly found that “2016 results and the market enrollment so far in 2017 show that the ACA individual market is not in a ‘death spiral.’” In fact, they found the health insurance market is set for stability and profitability as long as the administration is not “disruptive.”

  1. President Trump has been rooting for our health care to fail, thinking it would benefit him politically. Trump said, “The best thing we can do…is let Obamacare explode” and “Let it be a disaster because we can blame that on the Democrats.

Insurers and experts agree that costs are going up and some are exiting the Marketplace because of the Trump administration. The Trump administration and their allies in Congress have sowed uncertainty over the future of the law with repeal, are threatening to defund the law’s cost-sharing reductions, and are sabotaging health care.

See the damage Trump’s sabotage is doing…

  1. A new analysis from Oliver Wyman Actuarial Consulting found that up to two-thirds of rate increases were because of the Trump administration’s sabotage.

  1. The Kaiser Family Foundation found that insurance premiums could go up an estimated 19% because Republicans are trying to defund the health care law by failing to pay cost-sharing reductions.
