Students often leave college with more than just a degree. They leave with student debt. In fact, Ohio ranks worst in the nation for student debt.
As attorney general, Mike DeWine enabled private debt collectors to profit off of former students struggling to pay off their students loans by charging borrowers outrageous fees, including collection fees that often exceeded 40% of what borrowers owed. In some cases, former students were wrongfully sued or didn’t know they were being sued. DeWine’s office supported a bill that allows private debt collectors contracted by the attorney general’s office to charge unlimited collection fees, effectively codifying abusive debt collection practices.
